Chan Chun Sing on hiring of persons with disabilities in the public sector
It is “not meaningful” to compare hiring rates of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the public and private sectors as “the contexts and nature of jobs in the two sectors differ”. For example, the public sector has a significant proportion of roles for which a certain level of physical and mental fitness is required, such as the uniformed services. There is also no comparative data for the hiring rates of PWDs in the public sector across developed countries. Minister-in-charge of the Public Service Chan Chun Sing said this in response to an MP’s questions in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 13). Mr Chan said the Government does not want to set artificial targets or carry out “tokenism” just to meet targets. “We want to make sure that every job counts rather than count every job”, he said.
