Around one in three marriages in Singapore is between a Singaporean and a non-Singaporean, said MP Gerald Giam in Parliament on Monday (Mar 1). But permanent resident (PR) status can be difficult to obtain, he said, adding that of the many Singaporeans he meets who are appealing for their foreign spouse's applications, most are from lower-income groups and have spouses from countries such as China, Vietnam or Indonesia. He asked if economic considerations and educational qualifications had more weight than family ties, and suggested that family ties should be the main consideration.
