Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 1: Ng Eng Hen on fourth arm of SAF to combat digital threats

35:55 Min

The Singapore Armed Forces will be getting a fourth service - the Digital and Intelligence Service (DIS) - to add to the Army, Air Force and Navy. To be set up by the fourth quarter of this year, it will combat rising threats in the digital domain, which has become “as real as” the land, air and sea domains, said Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen. Dr Ng said digital threats can readily impact events in the physical world. Countries and non-state entities have also increasingly engaged in hybrid warfare, as seen in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Dr Ng told Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 2) that his ministry will continue to build up the next-generation SAF in other ways, including having more unmanned systems. It is increasing spending this year, relative to the past two years, due to the resumption of projects, training and exercises which were disrupted by COVID-19.
