Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 2: Desmond Tan on partnership against crime

11:21 Min

The Government plans to put in place a new regulatory framework to address the menace of errant debt collection. It will involve a licensing regime and restrictions on what debt collectors can and cannot do. Minister of State for Home Affairs Desmond Tan, who signalled this in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 3), said this comes after the authorities listened carefully to feedback from the ground. Turning to security officers, he said they play a critical role in keeping Singapore safe from terrorism. From July 2023, all security officers must complete the Recognise Terrorist Threats training before they can be deployed. Mr Tan said the Government will continue to strengthen cooperation with community partners to provide timely assistance to individuals and families, raise awareness of fraud prevention, and heighten vigilance against extreme anti-social attitudes and practices which create division. He added that the Government and the Home Team hope to continue to work with Singaporeans to prevent and combat crime.
