Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 3: Desmond Choo on responding to structural changes in workforce
Manpower policies must adjust dynamically to structural changes in the workforce, said MP Desmond Choo in Parliament on Friday (Mar 4). He gave several examples. The COVID-19 pandemic has destroyed many jobs and led to the rapid growth of gig or contract work, so the Government must ensure this does not impact retirement adequacy. Skills now have greater currency than job titles or academic qualifications. Greater weight must be given to skills when giving out work passes to foreigners. Mr Choo also pointed to the implications of the phenomenon dubbed the “Great Resignation”. He said it has underlined the growing importance of mental wellness in the workplace. He also suggested that Singapore establish a national code of practice on hybrid working.
