Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 4: Darryl David on reviewing the need for exams

02:27 Min

It is important for educators to inculcate the joy of learning in students so that they are not merely schooled, but are truly educated and have learned how to learn. MP Darryl David said this in Parliament on Monday (Mar 7). He noted that it is a challenge to do this in an assessment-driven, exam-focused education system where rote learning and regurgitation may “reap great rewards”. He asked if the Government would consider having fewer summative assessments like exams across primary and secondary school levels, and move towards formative assessments that cater to a “more holistic and complete development” of students.
