Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 4: Jamus Lim on later school start times
Delay upper primary school start times by half an hour and secondary school start times by an hour, suggested MP Jamus Lim in Parliament on Monday (Mar 7). He did not propose strict guidelines for post-secondary levels, but said it would be reasonable that ITEs, polytechnics and junior colleges start even later. Assoc Prof Lim pointed to research showing that giving adolescents additional sleep offers payoffs in terms of improved behaviour, health and academic outcomes. He added that staggered school start times, while sure to alter traffic patterns, were unlikely to add much to the overall morning rush hour.
