Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 4: Lim Wee Kiak on packaging and plastic waste

02:49 Min

Singapore is ranked among the top when it comes to the use of plastic bags, with 2.5 billion bags used a year. MP Lim Wee Kiak said this in Parliament on Monday (Mar 7). He noted that while implementing a plastic bag charge would reduce the number of bags used, it would also add to the increased cost of living for the lower socioeconomic groups. He wanted to know how the model for the impending plastic bag charge was developed and asked what can be done to mitigate its effects on the lower socioeconomic groups. Dr Lim also noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a surge in the disposal of single-use plastic food containers. He wanted to know how the Government is dealing with the disposal of these plastics.
