Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 5: Cheng Hsing Yao on building up capabilities in urban sustainability
Singapore should build up its capabilities in urban sustainability to solve its own problems and develop an exportable industry, said NMP Cheng Hsing Yao in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 8). He said to do so, Singapore can look at research and development (R&D) and talent development. In R&D, he suggested focusing on specific areas like coastal protection and issues unique to the region or tropical belt. Mr Cheng also noted that the built environment sector will be the key sector that needs to be transformed to fulfil Singapore’s future urban sustainability needs. He offered ideas on how the sector can attract and build up a critical mass of talent.
