Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Chee Hong Tat on changes to bus services, plans to grow maritime sector
To achieve financial prudence and sustainability in the public transport system, excess capacity must be regularly trimmed and reallocated. This includes some bus services when the MRT network is expanded. Making the point in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9), Senior Minister of State for Transport Chee Hong Tat explained how the Land Transport Authority decides on changes to bus services. He noted that by trimming existing bus services with low ridership, resources can be reallocated to provide new feeder services for new residential estates. This enables new demand to be met without a rapid rise in operating costs and subsidies. Mr Chee also elaborated on plans to grow the maritime sector.
