Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Mariam Jaafar on transforming the healthcare workforce
Nurses are the “bedrock” of Singapore's healthcare workforce, but its nurse-to-population ratio is lower than the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average of nine, said MP Mariam Jaafar in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9). She called for more to be done to raise the standing of the nursing profession and further review remuneration. Noting that the shortage of nurses is a global one, she asked what more the Government is doing to attract, train and retain nurses. Ms Mariam also asked about plans to recruit, nurture and deploy people from different backgrounds in healthcare, especially in leadership roles.
