Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Ng Ling Ling on support for families under stress
The Singapore Census showed that between 2010 and 2020, more young adults chose to stay single longer, the average number of children born fell and the old-age dependency ratio rose drastically. These social trends can place strain on families across different life stages, said MP Ng Ling Ling in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9). She noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has also added to family stresses. Ms Ng asked what the Ministry of Social and Family Development is doing to strengthen families. She also wanted to know what more can be done as a community to increase upstream efforts to help at-risk families such as those in low-income groups or those suffering from illnesses.
