Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 3: Patrick Tay on 3 areas to do better when it comes to lifelong learning
In Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28), Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin dealt with the expenditure estimates for the Ministry of Education. Following that, MP Patrick Tay spoke about how Singapore can do better in the pursuit of lifelong learning. He called for better career guidance for youths who have just left school and new entrants into the workforce, asking that SkillsFuture credit be allowed to be used for career coaching services. He also called for better access to quality Continuing Education and Training (CET). He said CET must be well-designed to attract adult learners who have to balance work and other commitments. It must also be relevant to industry demands, or it will not be effective in improving employment outcomes. He also asked the Government to require employers to provide training leave for workers. Lastly, Mr Tay called for better recognition of skills and competencies by employers.
