Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 4: Gerald Giam on workplace discrimination against persons with disabilities

02:35 Min

According to a survey last August, about 78 per cent of persons with disabilities (PWDs) have reported experiencing discrimination at the workplace, said MP Gerald Giam in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 1). These behaviours can range from exploitation and denigration to stereotyping and the display of patronising attitudes. On the soon-to-be enshrined anti-discrimination law, he noted that it is important for the legislation to provide sufficient protection for PWDs. This includes a definition of disability that is inclusive of the entire disability population in Singapore. He said employers should also be required to provide reasonable accommodation to PWD employees, and that the legislation should be enforceable in a timely manner, with measures to prevent repeat offences.
