Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 4: Leong Mun Wai on workplace discrimination
In Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 1), NCMP Leong Mun Wai urged the Government to ensure that new legislation would enforce meaningful changes in the quality, number and concentration of foreign work pass holders. He said stronger actions can be taken to ensure that Singapore’s workplaces remain diverse. He suggested imposing diversity limits on the total percentage that a company can hire from a certain foreign nationality to avoid communal enclaves. He also highlighted a potential loophole that could possibly allow larger companies to take advantage of the ratio for local and foreign hires for smaller firms by setting up subsidiaries.
