Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 4: Melvin Yong on ensuring safer workplaces

02:49 Min

How many workplace accidents reported in the past 18 months were due to a lack of, or grossly inadequate, safety measures by the companies’ management? MP Melvin Yong asked this question in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 1). He asked if the heightened safety period which is coming to an end can be made a permanent fixture, or at least to make permanent some of its requirements such as enhanced penalties for systemic lapses. Mr Yong called on the Ministry of Manpower to review and enhance whistle-blowing and feedback channels to make it easier for anyone, including members of the public, to report unsafe work practices. He also asked that SMEs be given more support to improve workplace safety and health standards.
