Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 5: Saktiandi Supaat on sustainability and impact on cost
In Parliament on Thursday (Mar 2), Deputy Speaker Jessica Tan dealt with the expenditure estimates for the Ministry of Transport (MOT). Following that, MP Saktiandi Supaat highlighted the need to change mindsets to transform the public transport system. He said it depends on getting commuters to move away from private transport towards public transport and active mobility. He wanted to know how MOT will support the infrastructure needed. Mr Saktiandi said Singapore also needs to focus on innovation as the quest for sustainable air and sea transport is a global one. Singapore should look to collaborate with other countries in such endeavours, he said. He wanted to know how MOT will achieve these targets. Mr Saktiandi also stressed the need to manage the cost impact on commuters. He wanted to know how the pursuit of environmental and financial sustainability targets and strategies will impact the cost for commuters and Singaporeans.
