Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 5: Xie Yao Quan on nurturing start-ups in the heartlands
Could the Ministry of National Development (MND) do more to attract start-ups to set up shop in heartland commercial precincts? MP Xie Yao Quan raised this question in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 2). He pointed out that rents of the heartland shops tend to be lower than at private commercial locales and could provide a conducive environment for businesses to start up and test ideas. With HDB offering commercial spaces at subsidised rents to raise registered social enterprises, he asked MND if there has been an uptick in the numbers and if there are plans to further enhance the initiative. He also proposed the coupling of heartland enterprises with co-living facilities to allow youths working in the heartlands to play and live together.
