Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 5: Yeo Wan Ling on safety of delivery riders
Delivery riders “have really bad odds stacked against them” in the course of their work. Using bicycles and power-assisted bicycles, they have to navigate pathways with pedestrians or face the dangers of sharing road space with much heavier vehicles. MP Yeo Wan Ling made this point in Parliament on Thursday (Mar 2). She asked for an update on what is being done to create awareness on sharing norms. She also asked that delivery riders be allowed a higher laden weight than the current 20-kilogramme limit, as well as differentiated weights for riders who primarily use pathways and those who are mostly on the roads. Riders have given feedback that the current limit forces them to compromise on safety, for example by taking the lightest bike frame, which can lead to instability with a full delivery load and bumpy road conditions.
