Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 6: Janil Puthucheary on mental healthcare and health data-sharing
A tiered model of mental healthcare has been recommended by an inter-agency taskforce which was set up in 2021. This will match the level of care to the severity of need and map both health and social services onto the same page to facilitate clearer referrals, coordination and care planning. It will optimise the use of resources and avoid an over-reliance on specialist care. A national framework has also been developed to ensure adequate competencies and standards among all mental health practitioners, ranging from lay responders to professionals. Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary said this in Parliament on Friday (Mar 3). He noted that for the changes to have a real impact, there must also be a proper understanding and perception of mental health issues as well as a willingness to seek help when needed. A national strategy for mental health and well-being is expected to be released by the end of the year and the Government will also consider establishing a central coordination office for these efforts. Dr Janil also said a Bill will be tabled later this year to enable the collection and sharing of health information among healthcare providers in a safe and secure manner.
