Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 7: Darryl David on Sport Hall of Fame, greater inclusivity through sport

03:44 Min

Except for Olympic and Paralympic medallists, all other athletes must have served another eight years in any sporting capacity on the national level from the time of them winning a qualifying medal to the time of the induction to the Singapore Sport Hall of Fame. This change to the Sport Hall of Fame induction criterion resulted in a 12-year gap between the last inductee in 2003 and the next inductee in 2015. MP Darryl David, who highlighted this in Parliament on Monday (Mar 6), said the eight years imposed is “somewhat arbitrary and rather excessive”, as with this criterion, an outstanding athlete “who for whatever reason is unable to complete eight years of service will not be given the recognition he or she deserves”. He asked the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) if it would consider reviewing the induction criteria, given that the last review was almost 20 years ago. Turning to the Disability Sports Masterplan, he asked MCCY to share the progress of the initiatives under its three main trusts, as well as the take-up rates of the various programmes. He also wanted to know if there are gaps in the current programme and how these can be plugged.
