Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 7: Raj Joshua Thomas on developing Singapore heritage and arts
Heritage and the arts play an important role in Singapore’s national identity, with a shared heritage providing a common space regardless of race, language or religion. For new citizens, heritage, culture and the arts can help to anchor them to Singapore and to adopt the national identity. NMP Raj Joshua Thomas, who said this in Parliament on Monday (Mar 6), asked the Culture, Community and Youth Minister to elaborate on his ministry’s vision and plans over the next five years to develop Singapore’s arts and culture. He also wanted to know how the ministry plans to build on its current arts and culture programmes to develop more vibrant and inclusive spaces in which people from diverse backgrounds, including new citizens and Permanent Residents, can interact.
