Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 7: Shahira Abdullah on marriage counselling and Wakaf
In Parliament on Monday (Mar 6), NMP Shahira Abdullah said Bersamamu - a face-to-face session with a Naib Kadi or religious official who solemnises Muslim marriages - is a good initiative that aims to guide and support newlywed couples for the first two years of marriage. She suggested having female marriage counsellors available as well to provide a different perspective, especially in situations such as conflicts where couples may feel more comfortable speaking to someone of the same gender. She also spoke about Wakaf Masyarakat Singapura or the Singapore Community Wakaf, a form of endowment dedicated to social and community projects. She asked how donors can be encouraged to donate to this and whether its establishment will increase competition and lead to donation fatigue.
