Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 7: Sitoh Yih Pin on building a home for the future
In Parliament on Monday (Mar 6), Deputy Speaker Christopher de Souza dealt with the expenditure estimates for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Following that, MP Sitoh Yih Pin highlighted the need to refresh Singapore’s social compact. He said even as Singapore grapples with the changing trends and needs of society, it must be mindful that discourses on highly emotive issues of social importance can serve to deepen fault lines if not carefully calibrated. He said discourse that is constructive and respectful can allow Singapore to better reflect on how it could refresh its social compact and strengthen the sense of national unity and identity. He added that Singapore can harness diversity as an agent for unity. Noting that the Forward Singapore exercise is working towards refreshing the social compact, he asked for an update on efforts to promote unity and build a strong, inclusive and cohesive society.
