Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 1: Dennis Tan on impact of Northern Sea Route

02:45 Min

With climate change, the Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the world. This could open up the Northern Sea Route even more quickly - an uninterrupted sea highway between Asia and Europe and the US, navigable by large container ships. It may have a significant impact on Singapore’s position as a global shipping hub and hence, on its economy, said MP Dennis Tan in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 28). He asked if the Government has an update on climate developments on the Northern Sea Route and whether it has studied the possible impact on the Tuas Mega Port as well as jobs and businesses in Singapore.
