Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 3:Â Denise Phua on students with special educational needs in mainstream schools
In Parliament on Friday (Mar 1), MP Denise Phua touched on the learning support needed by students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). She highlighted how such neurodiverse students often not only struggle with traditional education systems which fail to meet their unique learning and social needs, but may also be at higher risk of being victimised in schools by bullies. Despite improvements made over the past two decades in Ministry of Education (MOE) schools as well as the availability of a SEN fund for tertiary students, Ms Phua pointed out that there are still gaps. She asked MOE to provide updated data on the number of students with SEN as well as the support structure and support staff at all education levels. She also wanted to know what challenges MOE is facing in this space and to share how it might partner key disability training groups.Â
