In Parliament on Friday (Mar 1), Speaker Seah Kian Peng dealt with the expenditure estimates for the Ministry of Education (MOE). MP Patrick Tay then told the House about his “multi-vitamin strategy” for lifelong education. Just as people do not rely on a single vitamin for their health needs, he explained, learners should not be expected to follow a single academic path based on the same curriculum. He gave his definitions of various “vitamins”, ranging from A for “able, agile and adaptable” to C for “competencies for the future” and E for “empowering all students and learners”. Mr Tay suggested expanding the courses and programmes covered by the S$4,000 SkillsFuture Credit top-up and extending the validity of unused SkillsFuture Credits that expire next year. He also said the Government should examine how much resources it dedicates to those with special needs vis-à-vis other students and learners. It can and should do more to empower them, he said, especially to assimilate into adult life and the future of work.
