Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 3: Tin Pei Ling on smart future, technology for good, vernacular public communications, digital resilience and trust
In Parliament on Friday (Mar 1), Deputy Speaker Jessica Tan dealt with the estimates for the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI). MP Tin Pei Ling then highlighted the need for Singapore to be ready for the technological advancements and proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) which are reshaping industries and the global landscape. She said Singapore needs to invest ahead of time, preserve and strengthen digital trust, as well as leverage digital capabilities to bridge gaps and build communities and better lives. She asked MCI for an update on what it is doing to enhance investments in digital infrastructure and update regulations, as well as help companies and institutions implement higher digital security and resilience standards. Ms Tin also wanted to know how the implementation of the Cybersecurity Health Plan is progressing. She asked MCI for the preliminary results of the Digital Connectivity Blueprint, as well as efforts to support the workforce to be AI- and future-ready. Ms Tin wanted to know what the Government is doing to ensure that the Public Service media continues to safeguard social cohesion and common space, as well as preserve vernacular capabilities. She also asked how the Government will facilitate greater citizen involvement and participation in identifying problems and co-creating successful digital solutions.
