Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 4: Gerald Giam on menopause support for female workers

01:46 Min

Awareness of the health-related impact of perimenopause on the well-being of women does not seem to be widespread in Singapore, said MP Gerald Giam. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Mar 4), he highlighted the ill effects of perimenopause at work, saying it is important for employers to recognise and accommodate the changes and foster a supportive work environment that addresses the unique needs of these women. Mr Giam said Singapore can start with incentives for women who turn 45 to seek preventive checkups. Those who need physiotherapy for joint and muscle pain should be given either subsidised treatment or time off for it. Mr Giam said if women are forced to cut short their working life during their menopause transition, the economy will lose out on their valuable contributions. This scenario is entirely preventable, he added.
