Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 4: Louis Chua on affordability of hawker centres
With the rising cost of living hitting Singaporeans hard, measures ought to be put in place to ameliorate the financial pressures experienced by hawkers while ensuring the affordability of hawker food for all, said MP Louis Chua. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Mar 4), he singled out elevated rent as a reason for rising hawker food prices. He cited the introduction of a rental cap for the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar, saying a similar idea could be implemented for stalls in hawker centres operated by the National Environment Agency or even other Government-leased properties instead of a purely price-based tender where hawker stalls are simply awarded to the highest bidder.
