In Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 5), MP Henry Kwek asked for better support for contractors as the construction industry goes through challenging times. Specifically, he suggested prompt approval and partial disbursement of variation orders (VOs), especially for big and prolonged projects that usually have high-value VOs. VOs are instructions to contractors to vary the scope of contracted work. Mr Kwek noted instances where Government agencies approved large VOs at the tail end of a project period, creating cashflow problems for contractors.
