Japan to stop accepting foreign workers in food services sector as quota nears limit
Japan will stop accepting new foreign workers in the food services sector from today (Apr 13). Under Japan's specified skilled worker programme, its food services industry can hire up to some 50,000 foreign staff for five years through fiscal year 2028. As of end-February, there were about 46,000 such employees. New applications have been halted as officials warned the sector will hit its limit as soon as May. Official figures show the number of foreign workers in Japan hit a record 2.57 million in end-October 2025. Michiyo Ishida reports from Tokyo.
