Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 5: Ng Ling Ling on healthcare costs, Healthier SG and professional development of GPs
What are the primary drivers behind rising healthcare costs in Singapore and how do they contribute to hospital bill sizes? What mechanisms are in place to ensure that public healthcare remains affordable? How can public hospitals become more cost-efficient? Is MediShield Life coverage expected to continue to be adequate to help Singaporeans keep out-of-pocket expenditure low? These were some questions raised by MP Ng Ling Ling in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 5). On Healthier SG, she said that besides reaching a wide base, there must be healthcare indicators of progress too. She asked what specific health outcomes are targeted for improvement under personalised health plans for those who have enrolled, and whether prevalence rates for chronic diseases are expected to fall. Ms Ng also highlighted the growing role being played by general practitioners in healthcare strategies. She asked if the Ministry of Health has an overall professional development plan for them, including training in the relatively new areas of social prescriptions and mental health treatment as well as support to cope with the opportunity cost of taking time away from seeing patients.
