Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 5: Poh Li San on sustainable aviation fuels and attracting talents into aviation sector

03:30 Min

Singapore is the first country in the world to impose a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) levy on passengers. How does the longer-term goal and the means for funding the higher cost of SAF adoption compare with other key aviation hubs? Is the increase in the supply of SAF on track to meet the three to five per cent goal in 2030? How can the cost of SAF be kept competitive given the increasing global demand for feedstock and biofuels? MP Poh Li San raised these questions in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 5). In view of the high traffic growth trajectory and the opening of Terminal 5, she wanted to know how the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) intends to recruit and train aviation professionals to support other roles such as aeronautical and aerospace engineers and ground handling operators. She asked how CAAS is working with the Institutes of Higher Learning to ensure that the course curriculum related to aviation is updated with the latest industry standards and practices. She also wanted to know if there will be sufficient well-trained professionals for the aviation industry in the next 10 years, and if there are plans to encourage more women to join the sector.
