Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 6: Usha Chandradas on Our SG Arts Plan, Cultural Concierge, Cultural Medallion grant and redevelopment of 45 Armenian Street

07:57 Min

In Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 6), NMP Usha Chandradas asked for clarification on the amount allocated for the National Arts Council’s development plans under the Our SG Arts Plan. She also wanted to know the rationale behind the allocation of these yearly amounts of expenditure. She said the availability of arts spaces is a perennial hot topic. The potential conversion of Gillman Barracks into public and private housing sees the potential loss of one arts district, she said. She asked if the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth will work to ensure that its unique artistic character is preserved or will the area be completely transformed. Ms Chandradas also asked what the expenditure relating to the Cultural Concierge will entail. On the Cultural Medallion Award, she suggested the ministry offer a direct cash grant and additional support such as health benefits for recipients. She also asked for details of the expenditure plans for the redevelopment of 45 Armenian Street, which was the previous permanent home of the Substation.
