Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 2: Alex Yam on strengthening national resilience against foreign influence

01:16 Min

In an increasingly complex external environment where information flows freely and narratives can be shaped by foreign actors, Singaporeans risk being influenced by interests that run counter to the nation’s well-being. Even worse, they may become “useful idiots to foreign causes”. To safeguard against this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) must play a crucial role in keeping Singaporeans well-informed about the country’s foreign policy principles, core national interests and a broader geopolitical context. MP Alex Yam said this in parliament on Monday (Mar 3). He asked MFA to share how it partners other agencies to develop media literacy programmes and help Singaporeans evaluate information and detect malicious campaigns.
