Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 2: Henry Kwek on future-proofing Singapore’s foreign policy

01:04 Min

Singapore’s foreign policy has served it well through three distinctive periods - the Cold War when the world was divided into blocs of influence, the period after the fall of the Berlin Wall which was dominated by the US, and the time from the mid-2010s which has been shaped largely by US-China rivalry. MP Henry Kwek said this in parliament on Monday (Mar 3). With the new Trump administration in the US setting off “tectonic shifts” in global trade and geopolitics, he asked how Singapore can ensure that its foreign policy is sufficiently future-proof for the challenges ahead.
