Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 3: Joan Pereira on urgent measures to tackle hoarding

05:25 Min

While a new initiative was launched early this year to address the problem of hoarding in Singapore, additional stricter measures are urgently needed, said MP Joan Pereira. She pointed to the health and safety hazards of hoarding, as well as lack of progress causing a breakdown in neighbourly relations and loss of trust in the authorities. Ms Pereira suggested that hoarders with mental health issues be required to accept professional assessment and treatment. She also asked the government to consider introducing legislation to allow relocation of recalcitrant hoarders. She spoke in parliament on Tuesday (Mar 4).
