Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 6: Xie Yao Quan on online safety
On average, social media platforms took action only on half of legitimate user reports about content that violates guidelines and about five days to act, said MP Xie Yao Quan in parliament on Friday (Mar 6). He asked the Ministry of Digital Development and Information how it would work with the platforms to act on user reports and take down harmful content faster. He wanted to know if the ministry would step up punitive measures if platforms fail to fulfil their obligations under the law. He also asked if Telegram would be designated as a social media service and not just a messaging application.
