Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 6: Melvin Yong on strengthening families
Families face considerable pressures in Singapore’s fast-paced, competitive society, said MP Melvin Yong. He asked how the government plans to enhance and scale up the Strengthening Families Programme to better support families facing multiple stresses. He also suggested research to understand and pre-empt intergenerational cycles of children being born out of wedlock, a pattern which has been observed in overseas studies - while at the same time reviewing how to improve support for unwed parents in meeting their children’s needs. Mr Yong spoke in parliament on Thursday (Mar 5).
