Darryl David on motion calling for clear and achievable goals for sporting success

14:26 Min

MP Darryl David proposed three amendments to a motion moved by Workers’ Party MPs in Parliament on Thursday (Jul 6), calling for clear and achievable goals for sporting success. The first is to recognise that celebrating the accomplishments of Singapore’s athletes should go beyond the major Games stated in the motion to cover other events including single-sport competitions at regional and world levels. The second amendment is on the continuing nature of reviews and goal-setting for Singapore’s high-performance sports and its sports system. And the final amendment is to make the point that success should be measured beyond the “quantitative marker” of winning medals or qualifying for international tournaments. The amendments were to be debated in the House concurrently. Mr David also highlighted the need for athletes to get better support in terms of professional development to prepare for a post-competition career, as well as in the area of mental health.
