Debate on President’s Address: Joan Pereira on trust in leadership
The events of the past three years during the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the important role Government leadership plays in unifying people and providing a clear direction for a nation to work towards. Making this point in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 18), MP Joan Pereira said leaders must not only be competent, they must also demonstrate in word and deed that they have the nation’s and people’s best interests at heart. At the same time, she said, sound policies and measures can often only succeed with helping hands in the community and the private sector closing the last-mile gap in delivery. Ms Pereira also pointed to the human touch in governance, saying leaders should realise the impact that even a small gesture or kind word can have in encouraging or inspiring others.
