Debate on President’s speech: Gho Sze Kee on risks and rewards for PMETs amid AI disruption
About two-thirds of Singapore’s workforce are PMETs and while they will be the most vulnerable to AI disruption, they are also the ones who could power the country’s transformation, said MP Gho Sze Kee. She noted that AI will have the greatest impact higher up the value chain and that Singapore’s advanced economy is knowledge- and services-heavy, sectors where changes wrought by AI will move fastest and hit hardest. At the same time, the AI wave presents great opportunities and this is where Singapore’s high proportion of PMETs and supporting advanced infrastructure could be a strategic advantage. In fact, she said AI could be a key enabler that allows Singapore to break the mould of slower growth in advanced, mature economies. In parliament on Tuesday (Sep 23), Ms Gho also spoke about how PMETs form the core of Singapore’s middle class, which makes up about two-thirds of Singapore households. A thriving middle class is thus essential to the country’s social stability and cohesion, she said, calling for this segment to receive more support.
