Debate on President’s speech: Wan Rizal on uplifting lower-wage workers
Enhance funding for the Progressive Wage Model (PWM) and the Progressive Wage Credit Scheme (PWCS) until Singapore reaches the OECD benchmark of the 20th percentile being two-thirds of median income. Also, raise the wage ceiling beyond S$3,000 so that as wages rise, PWM workers will still be covered. Address how wage increases can lead to a loss of social assistance and future-proof upskilling of lower-wage workers, including training them in artificial intelligence. These suggestions were made by MP Wan Rizal in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 23). He also called for greater mental health support for people at all stages of life - from students, to workers and the sandwiched generation, to seniors.
