Dennis Tan on Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill

14:16 Min

In Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 7), MP Dennis Tan voiced support for the Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill but raised several concerns on the proposal to remove or lower mandatory minimum sentences for first-time offenders convicted of careless or dangerous driving offences. “I trust that the Government will assure Singaporeans today that the proposed changes in this Bill will not lead to a relaxation of the law or the enforcement efforts against careless or reckless driving and result in a worsening of the present situation,” he said. On the classification of repeat offenders in the Bill, Mr Tan wanted to know the rationale for previous speeding convictions in excess of 40km/h of the road’s speed limit or vehicle speed limit, as some Singaporeans will regard speeding in excess of lower speed ranges “to be already excessive and deserving of the current minimum punishment under the present law”.
