Desmond Choo on Environmental Public Health (Amendment) Bill
Singapore clearly needs tougher actions to help its cleaners take the fight to the litterbugs, MP Desmond Choo said in Parliament on Monday (Feb 6). He wanted to know if the National Environment Agency (NEA) can tap on the Government's digital capabilities in notifying flat owners and tenants of possible prosecution. Turning to the penalties for high-rise littering, he urged the Government to consider making the Corrective Work Order mandatory for offenders. In cases where their acts have caused grave bodily harm, the courts should also have the discretion to impose a jail term, he said. Mr Choo said this will hold high-rise litterbugs to higher responsibility, compared with general littering in public places. On surveillance cameras, he asked if NEA can consider working with the Singapore Police Force to widen its surveillance capabilities without adding to the costs of deployment.
