Don Wee on Bretton Woods Agreements (Amendment) Bill
The Bretton Woods Agreements signed in 1944 resulted in the creation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. While these institutions have played important roles in global economic stability and development, they face challenges in addressing the complex issue of climate change, said MP Don Wee. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Jul 3), he believes Singapore can help to push for climate change as a central component. These may include climate considerations in their policies, lending practices and technical assistance programmes. He hopes the Monetary Authority of Singapore can help to facilitate coordination by fostering dialogue and collaboration between developed and developing countries, as well as providing technical assistance in developing climate-related policies. Mr Wee noted that by supporting the IMF, Singapore can also contribute to poverty reduction, improved infrastructure and increased access to clean energy in developing countries. He said this can foster economic growth and stability, which will benefit the global economy.
