Gan Kim Yong on Singapore’s COVID-19 response

31:51 Min

The key lesson from the COVID-19 pandemic is that there will always be unexpected challenges that will surprise us, said Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 21), he said while it is not known when the next pandemic will happen or what future crises may be like, the one thing that the country can be confident of and rely on is the “Singapore spirit” of working together, trusting one another and looking out for each other, “like family”. Mr Gan said even though the worst of the pandemic is over, the Government will continue to work with businesses on the journey of transformation. He pointed out that many people worked tirelessly behind the scenes in Singapore’s COVID-19 fight, even taking up functions and responsibilities they were unfamiliar with. Mr Gan said it is not just individual efforts but the whole society coming together to ensure that Singapore will prevail. He thanked all businesses and the National Trades Union Congress for their contributions, saying their partnership played an important role in the crisis. He stressed the need to continue to strengthen this partnership, even in the absence of a crisis. He also thanked frontline workers stationed at supermarkets, warehouses, air and sea ports and care facilities, as well as other essential services, for helping Singapore to overcome the “crisis of a generation” and putting the country on a strong foundation for recovery.
