Students at publicly funded institutes of higher learning who are from lower- to middle-income households can tap Government bursaries which are tiered with greater support for the most needy. There are also Government-funded loans that can be used to pay tuition fees; these are not means-tested and are interest-free during the course of study, payable only after graduation. Minister of State for Education Gan Siow Huang gave details of these in Parliament on Monday (Feb 14) in response to an MP’s question. As for students at private education institutions (PEIs), she said they can apply for financial aid offered by the PEIs, or for education loans from commercial banks.
