Gan Siow Huang on supporting unpaid caregivers

11:48 Min

Based on available data in 2023, there were about 89,000 Singapore residents who were not working due to caregiving responsibilities. More than half were aged 50 and above, most of the rest were aged 30 to 49, and a small proportion were aged 15 to 29. Minister of State for Manpower Gan Siow Huang gave the figures in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 15). Replying to an MP’s question, she said there was no specific data on the number of residents carrying out unpaid caregiving, or how many do not have the means to support themselves when they become seniors. She also responded to questions on legislating paid family care leave for employees who are the primary caregivers for elderly parents or family members with disabilities, and financial support for those who may have to give up prime working years to care for loved ones.
